What Are German Tax Classes?

Germany's tax system uses six different tax classes (Steuerklassen I-VI) to determine how much income tax is withheld from your monthly salary. Choosing the right tax class can significantly impact your take-home pay and annual tax burden.

The Six Tax Classes Explained

Tax Class I (Steuerklasse I)

This is the default class for single employees, divorced individuals, and married persons living permanently separated. If you're single and working in Germany, this is likely your tax class.

Tax Class II (Steuerklasse II)

Designed for single parents who live alone with their child and are entitled to the single parent relief amount (Entlastungsbetrag). This class offers additional tax benefits compared to Class I.

Tax Class III (Steuerklasse III)

Available for married couples where one spouse earns significantly more than the other. The higher-earning spouse takes Class III, which has the lowest tax rate, while the other takes Class V.

Tax Class IV (Steuerklasse IV)

The standard class for married couples where both spouses have similar incomes. Both partners are taxed at the same rate, making monthly deductions more balanced.

Tax Class V (Steuerklasse V)

Used by the lower-earning spouse in a III/V combination. This class has higher monthly deductions, but the couple benefits overall through Class III.

Tax Class VI (Steuerklasse VI)

Applied to employees with a second or additional job. This class has the highest tax rate because it doesn't include any tax-free allowances.

How to Change Your Tax Class

Married couples can change their tax class combination once per year. Submit an application to your local tax office (Finanzamt). The change typically takes effect from the following month.

Which Tax Class is Right for You?

  • Similar incomes: Class IV/IV is usually best
  • One high earner: Class III/V maximizes monthly net income
  • Single parent: Class II provides extra relief
  • Planning parental leave: III/V can optimize parental allowance
